Usually I post my research discoveries for you to enjoy. But this time I’m asking for you help, and I will do so on occasion in the future as well. Below you can hear a 2-minute talk, recorded from WBAI radio in NYC. The speaker says that he was in the studio when Trane recorded “Wise One” in 1964, and that he was on a bus with Trane from Harlem to Newport in 1965. I have been told by a mutual friend that singer Donna Jewell and her husband were also on this bus, which Coltrane rented for this one occasion only.
My QUESTIONS are:
Who is the speaker?
Who else was on that bus to Newport 1965?
Here is the audio:
THANK YOU!
All the best,
Lewis
P.S. Since today’s post is short, this could be a great day for you to look through my previous posts and catch up on what you’ve missed! I think there are about 50 posts so far, and you can scroll through from the bottom up, in the order posted. That way, when there is a series with several parts, you’ll read the parts in order. Enjoy!
Trane enabling people to go up to Newport, and to boot, he's playing cassettes of an upcoming album. Wow. How wonderful was that!
The bus he's talking about I believe was a regular thing George Wein provided musicians from the '60s thru the '70s at least (except for the years that Newport Jazz moved to NYC.) I've spoken with a number of musicians who recalled this bus and the conversations that came from unusual seatmates being paired together for a few hours.
