Usually I post my research discoveries for you to enjoy. But this time I’m asking for you help, and I will do so on occasion in the future as well. Below you can hear a 2-minute talk, recorded from WBAI radio in NYC. The speaker says that he was in the studio when Trane recorded “Wise One” in 1964, and that he was on a bus with Trane from Harlem to Newport in 1965. I have been told by a mutual friend that singer Donna Jewell and her husband were also on this bus, which Coltrane rented for this one occasion only.
My QUESTIONS are:
Who is the speaker?
Who else was on that bus to Newport 1965?
Here is the audio:
THANK YOU!
All the best,
Lewis
P.S. Since today’s post is short, this could be a great day for you to look through my previous posts and catch up on what you’ve missed! I think there are about 50 posts so far, and you can scroll through from the bottom up, in the order posted. That way, when there is a series with several parts, you’ll read the parts in order. Enjoy!
Trane enabling people to go up to Newport, and to boot, he's playing cassettes of an upcoming album. Wow. How wonderful was that!
Was this mystery ever solved??
I thought the studio reference to "Wise One" would be a tell since it should narrow the list of suspects considerably (the Guernsey cataloging of that April date doesn't add anything beyond what is in the Coltrane Reference), as well as their having been there for Newport 1965.
Was this radio recording made pre-1976? At the risk of raising a naive suggestion (and not knowing what his voice sounds like and not being able to find a sample, unlike the other members whose voices are well known to me), could this be GARRISON?? Or is he easily eliminated?
