Isn't there also a Miles recording where you can hear a chair scraping the floor?

Thanks Dave--See below--not a chair, but there's a famous one on Old Folks. I've also been told about a car horn honking, a door slamming, and other things but when I checked out the recordings in question, those sounds were not there. In any case this Monk one has never been noted before!

There's that squeak that has always sounded to me like Miles leaning back in his chair about 1:14 into Old Folks.

Thanks Jim, for reminding me about that one. Miles Never played sitting down, so it can't be his chair, but it sounds to me like maybe he adjusted the mike or music stand just then, especially because he stops playing at the same time. My colleague David Ake has a whole chapter inspired by this--he calls it a "creak"-- in his book Jazz Matters, talking about why takes with sounds like this are sometimes released: https://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Matters-David-Ake/dp/0520266897
