The thing with" Impressions" for me is ,I play the melody differently every time.
Also when I give my students the tune "So What" they find videos of some artists playing it so fast. Not even close to Mile's tempo and I ask myself why don't just play Impressions?
Hello Dom! Yes, it's definitely good to change things up. I used to do Impressions in 3! As for tempo, even Miles played "So What" very fast in the group with Wayne. But of course you're right that "Impressions" is more designed for a fast tempo. All the best!
On the recently released "Evenings at the Village Gate," Coltrane also calls Impressions as So What if you listen closely before he counts off the tune.

I would sometimes play it as a samba on my nylon string guitar and it worked beautifully
