(Paying Subscribers, at the bottom you’ll find the first-ever article about the word “jazz,” plus the surrounding articles from that newspaper page of 1913!)
Fascinating! In regard to you earlier article on the subject: I was wondering if the popular idea that the word referred to sexual activity, could it just be that so many jazz numbers do have titles with clear reference to sex ?
There's an indelible myth that "rock & roll" referred directly to sex, then subsequently denoted the music. I have noticed that lots of different music makes people think of sex, or is even about sex!
With regard to both of these comments, it appears that the word "jazz" went from meaning "energy, liveliness" to "sexy," but AFTER it became the name of the music, and initially separately from that. But people don't know the chronology and they make their own assumptions. As with that and with "rock and roll," yes, people do have sex on the brain! THANK YOU
About 10 Years Ago or so on Facebook I teased Wallace Rooney about the „German Roots“ of Jazz, since the Jass Word was a Swiss and Austrian Cardgame and Skat was a German Cardgame, whereas Funk derived from Spark and was also used for CB-, Radio-, and TV Signals.
The Reason was the supposed bad Roots of the Word Jazz.
I argued that in Europe the Word has definitely not a bad Reputation.
In older Times the Word Jazz was also used for the Drumset here in Switzerland.
In Europe Jazz stands rather for „Brainy Spontanity“.
Not every Four Letter Word has smelly Roots.
Naturally Jazz has no European Roots, I was just a bit nasty!
Ha ha, yes I understand what you're saying. As I showed in Part 1, the word "jazz" definitely did Not have a bad reputation at first, but the separate but related word "gism" Did develop the meaning of semen. THANK YOU ERIK

How common was it for journalists to have "Scoop" as a joint nickname?
