(The audio wasn’t working so I re-posted it. Let me know if you have any issue with it please.)
You heard the first half of this interview in Part 1 (see the Index as always). I phoned him on November 16, 2012 and put him on the speaker in a room of about 14 of my Masters students. I thank one of them, Steve Beck, for sharing his recording with you and me.
Shorter begins this part by talking about Herbie Hancock, and then he takes more questions from graduate students. At 1:18 guitarist and composer Terry McManus asks about musical vibrations and the universe. At 8:10, I ask Wayne about Blakey’s concerts with Johnny Hartman in Japan. Saxophonist and reed doubler Daniel Peterson at 10:34 asks about Wayne’s unrecorded compositions. Bassist Jonah Jonathan at 12:07 asks about the album Speak No Evil. And at 13:52, Dustin Mallory, a drummer and educator asks about Philly Joe Jones, which reminds Wayne of Joe’s Dracula imitation (which he also performed on an LP). Please listen, and enjoy:
Among the many quotes from Wayne that are both witty and profound, I love this one at 8:00: ”There’s no such thing as a short story.”
All the best,
Lewis
